A great ride! A great cause! A great event!

Research shows that Galveston Bay has lost more than 30,000 acres of valuable wetland habitat over the past four decades.

On Oct. 20 and 21, Lyondell will sponsor the first-ever "Lyondell Bike Around the Bay," a two-day 170-mile bike ride to benefit the Galveston Bay Foundation, a non-profit organization that aims to preserve the natural resources of the bay and its estuaries in southeast Houston, Texas.

"Too few people know what a valuable resource the bay is. We hope this bike ride will introduce more people to the bay."

The scenic "Lyondell Bike Around the Bay" tour will begin in Baytown, Texas, and continue through picturesque towns along the bay’s upper coast, showcasing the beauty and splendor of the seventh-largest estuary in the United States. Up to 1,500 people are expected to participate in the inaugural ride. Riders will spend Saturday night in Galveston, where they will enjoy an informal beach party at Moody Gardens, and return to the starting point on Sunday.

It is important that we all work to preserve the bay," said Mark Gaddy, plant manager of Lyondell’s La Porte complex and a foundation board member. "It not only brings pleasure to many families through boating and fishing, but it also drives the area’s economy from fishing to tourism to energy to industry.

Galveston Bay is strategically linked to several Lyondell manufacturing sites in Pasadena, La Porte, Channelview and Houston. Providing marine access for Lyondell to transport products, the Houston Ship Channel and the San Jacinto River both flow in to Galveston Bay. In addition to Lyondell’s extensive community involvement activities that promote conservation, environmental education and sustainable development, the company has supported the Galveston Bay Foundation for several years.

"We are honored to partner with Lyondell in this effort to raise awareness about Galveston Bay and its people and places," said foundation president Bob Stokes.
