Properties
Ethylene glycols are a group of colorless, essentially odorless liquids with properties that make them useful in a number of applications. Ethylene glycol, diethylene glycol and triethylene glycol are all produced by reacting ethylene oxide with water. Ethylene glycols are used as chemical intermediates in the manufacture of many ester-based plastics and textiles. Their excellent solvent properties make them useful in the manufacture of latex paints, surface cleaners, adhesives, hydraulic fluids, printing inks, and electronics to name a few. Ethylene glycols also have a high boiling point, which makes them an excellent choice for a number of automotive engine coolants and heat transfer fluids.
